After everyone disperses you preview the photo on you LCD screen only to realize that they all have bright red eyes. Why does this always happen? It’s called the red-eye effect. Here is a simple explanation as to why happens in photographs and some tips to help you avoid it.

This phenomenon occurs when you take a picture with a flash in a dimly lit environment. In dim light, the pupil is wide open to let enough light into the eye to allow you to see. When the flash goes off the bright light enters the pupil and reflects the red of the blood vessels that supply the retina.

Many animals have a reflective layer of tissue on their retinas that prevent this from happening called a tapetum lucidum. This tissue simply reflects the light back out of the eyes. That’s why some animals’ eyes seem to glow when you shine headlights or a flash light on them at night.

You don’t have to have any red eyes in your pictures though. There are some simple steps you can take to avoid it. Most cameras have a red-eye setting. This setting makes the camera set off two flashes. The first small burst of light sends a warning to the eyes of the people you’re photographing causing the pupils to contract. Then a second flash fires when you take the picture. This method works very well and will eliminate this problem from most of your pictures.

You can also cut down on the appearance of this phenomenon by having your flash farther away from the lens of the camera. If you have a digital SLR camera you can use a hand-held flash. Bouncing the light from your hand-held flash off ceiling will not only eliminate red eyes from your photo, but will also help you avoid getting the harsh shadows and flat look that some flash photography can have.

If your camera doesn’t have a setting to help close your subject’s pupils and you can’t use a hand-held flash you can try taking the picture without a flash. Increasing your camera’s ISO setting will make your camera’s sensor more sensitive to light. Changing the f-stop to a lower number will open up the lens letting more light into the camera when you open the shutter. Changing these camera settings will help you get a properly exposed picture even in low light.

Red eyes in your picture aren’t the end of the world. Even the most basic photo editing software programs can correct the eye color in your photographs. If you don’t have a photo editing program try downloading free software like Picasa. You can correct the red-eye effect easily with this software.

My first tip for taking digital photography for anyone whether they are beginning, or have some degree of experience is “don’t be frightened of your camera”. Get used to handling your camera so that you feel comfortable with it. Make sure you know where all the controls are, and familiarise yourself with their functions. This is one of the basic beginning photography tips that often gets overlooked as it is such an obvious one.

Once you are comfortable handling your digital camera and have learnt how to use all the controls and functions, my next tip for taking digital photography is to take lots and lots of pictures. The beauty of digital photography is that you do not need to keep every picture that you take. You are not paying for a long processing sequence like you would be if you were using a camera that uses rolls of film, so you can be a lot more extravagant when it comes to taking pictures. Plus you may just take a prize winning photo purely by chance, and any photos you don’t want you can simply delete.

Another of the basic beginning photography tips that people often forget is to hold the camera steady. Again this may sound pretty obvious but it’s surprising just how many of us forget this simple little tip when we rush to get a good photo. It is important to actually practice holding the camera so that you automatically steady it for every picture that you take. How often have you seen the chance of a great picture only to rush it and ruin the shot? It’s far better to get one or two great pictures than dozens of blurred or poor quality ones.

My next tip is to always make sure that you have enough memory capacity on your digital camera. There is nothing worse than coming across something that would make a great picture only to find that you have no more room on your camera. Get into the habit of going through the photos stored on your camera on a regular basis, and deleting the ones you don’t want, and downloading and storing the ones you do want onto your computer, or have them printed off. Also buy a second card for your camera so that you always have a spare one with you just in case you need it.

Maybe some of them are still coming out slightly blurred, so you will need to pay attention to your focusing. Remember that a digital camera has a tendency to take a little longer to focus when compared to a camera that uses roll film.

A few people have emailed me asking for some bird photography tips and tricks of the trade. After some thought on the subject, I have come up with the following 10 tips for photographing birds.

 

Practice with the Locals. The best way to become familiar with photographing birds in your own backyard. What birds can you photograph at home? Do you have a birdfeeder or birdbath set up in your yard to draw birds in? Use these local birds to see behaviors such as how close you can get before they spook, and whether they eat at the feeder or take the food to somewhere nearby to enjoy it. Start by photographing birds in your yard to get used to their movements and feeding habits.

 

Timing is everything. Most species of birds eat in the morning or late afternoon. Get to know the habits of the bird that you are photographing and where it returns every day to feed.

 

Walk softly. Learn how to approach birds quietly and with very little movement. This goes for all wildlife photography.

 

Be respectful of nature. When photographing a bird, or photographing any wildlife, never corner the animal. Be mindful that the bird has a way of escape if it gets scared. This helps to ensure that the bird does not begin to fear all humans because of one disrespectful one.

 

Be wary of the weather. If the weather is threatening, the birds will tuck themselves where they will be safe from the weather. It may be best to just try another day.

 

Know what you want. Study bird photographs. Most bird photographs were the result of countless hours of waiting, and perhaps returning for several days to the same location that the bird frequents. If the image that you seek is of an Osprey catching a fish, the odds are very small that you will just happen upon that opportunity and get it, especially with the perfect light and background.

 

Do not chase. It sometimes is hard to finally see the bird that you want to photograph and not chase it around wildly. Be conscious of your movements and the signals that you giving to the animal. If you act frantic, don’t you think that the bird will too?

 

Behaviors make the best bird photographs. Photograph birds doing natural movements such as pruning, bathing, or feeding make for much more interesting photographs than a bird sitting on a wall.

 

Prepare in advance. When you know where you are going, and when the bird will be there, it is easy to get a chair and tripod set up so that you are ready to photograph the bird when it arrives. Do your homework.

 

Be patient! I always have to reiterate this with new wildlife photographers. The bird is not going to arrive and ask for its photo to be taken! It is a blessing when the opportunity for a great photograph happens. Appreciate it!

Chroma Key photography refers to the process of digitally replacing the background image in a photograph with any other selected image. You also call it as Green Screen Photography. Photographers deploy this technique to create a unique and striking cinematography.

You have to make sure that you will not shooting directly with the sunlight, which will create the dark shade on the picture.
