Art, Photography & Reproduction

It is nothing new. Commercialism maybe somewhat more aggressive now than in Rembrandts day, but the studios of his era were just as equally skilled at producing the same painting many times over, than a digitally enhanced limited edition of today’s genre.

The question it raises is that as technology moves apace where is the ‘line drawn’ between what could be described as an artists preparation and that which is computer generated origination? More specifically does it matter?

One could argue that artists have always sought to enhance their work and utilizing today’s technology is no different to the past. The fact is that what can be achieved today is far greater than anyone could have possibly imagined even 20 years ago.

It really all comes down to how you define what is art and what constitutes an artists preparation.

Projection and scaling tripods through to Obscura cameras were commonly used in the works of many of the ‘masters’, so why should using photoshop be viewed any differently.

Photography and art are like two cousins, related disciplines. But that ignores the fact that painting was the ‘photography’ of its day. Royal courts would send ambassadors with realistic miniature portraits for prospective suitors, in much the same way as a photographic portfolio captures the lines and cheekbones for a model agency.

People often forget where they have ‘come from’ and this is also true of all types of art including abstract art and contemporary art. It was as much about advertising, marketing and politics as the beauty or skill of its creator.

To me the use of any technique or process by the artist must be seen as part of the work and methodology. Surely the point is this. It is not the technique or process that is important, it is how you use them. Indeed there is a whole separate area of creativity here.

A good artist will always try something new. They will embrace techniques and use them to ‘create’ and whilst a purist may not agree, they do so out of ignorance to the past.

Tips For Still Life Art Photography

June 14, 2011 by Digital Photography

Although you can create some fantastic photos that you can display as art, learning a few tricks to enhance the pictures can make all the difference.

Take a simple picture of a tomato, for example. You can find many designer rooms complete with pictures of food items that look great. But if you look closely, you can notice that it is not just a simple picture of a red tomato that is hanging on the wall integrated into the decorating scheme. There is a certain element of artistic merit in the photograph.

The photo in the stylized room that you love looking at is not just a photograph of a simple tomato that someone shot at random. A lot of thought and artistic value went into that picture. Do you see the droplets of moisture on the bright red skin of the tomato? Those droplets make the tomato seem juicy. You can almost taste the cool, flavorful tomato just by looking at the picture.

And the tomato in the picture is not just dead-centre either. It is probably a picture of part of a tomato-maybe just the top part or a quarter of it. The tomato has become the subject of the picture that has a certain shape, leaving some of the picture up to your imagination. The space around the tomato also makes up empty space which makes you focus on the subject (the tomato).

Pay attention to the colors in the photograph as well. Isn’t that tomato a bright, bright red? Is it set against a contrasting background to make it show up its redness and juiciness even more? Is the background plain, or does it have a pattern that contrasts against the tomato’s one-tone red color? All of these artistic elements can be used to enhance the photo.

Another approach to your tomato picture might be to take a group photo of several tomatoes together. Again, you can place them against a contrasting background to show them off, or against a white background to help you focus more on the tomatoes themselves.

You could also place the tomato or tomatoes in an attractive dish that might add to the artistic effect of the photograph. The dish would become another element of your photo design.

Although the above is talking about a simple picture of a tomato that can be used as photographic art, the same ideas can be applied to any still life photograph you may choose to use as art. Use the object to take advantage of its best feature (in the above case, the juiciness of the tomato and its bright red color) and use color enhancement techniques for contrasting elements. Position the objects to use the positive and negative space as part of the artwork.

Experiment and play with the objects until you give your photograph the ‘right’ touch. Photographs can be simply photographs, but you can make those photographs into art that you will be proud to display.

2.      Still Life: Inside the Antarctic Huts of Scott and Shackleton
Still Life is a unique and hauntingly beautiful photographic study of the Antarctic huts that served as expedition bases for explorations led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton.

At the turn of the twentieth century Antarctica was the focus of one of the last great races of exploration and discovery. Known as the ‘heroic age’, from 1895 to 1917 Antarctic explorers set off from their huts in search of adventure, science and glory but some, such as Scott, were never to return. The World Wars intervened and the huts were left as time capsules of Edwardian life; a portrait of King Edward VII hangs amid seal blubber, sides of mutton, a jar of gherkins, penguin eggs, cufflinks and darned trousers.

One of New Zealand’s best known photographers, Jane Ussher, was invited by the Antarctic Heritage Trust to record ‘the unusual, the hidden and minutiae of these sites’. The Executive Director of the Trust, Nigel Watson, provides a fascinating introduction to the history and atmosphere of each hut and detailed photographic captions. Key points: features Discovery Hut (used by both Scott and Shackleton), Shackleton’s Hut and Scott’s Hut on Ross Island in McMurdo Sound; unique and intimate glimpse into the lives of Antarctic explorers, a subject that holds great fascination for readers worldwide; large format and seven gatefolds display Jane Ussher’s intriguing and evocative photography with stunning impact.

Author Biography

Jane Ussher is one of New Zealand’s foremost portrait photographers, best known for the impressive body of work she developed during twenty-nine years as chief photographer at the New Zealand Listener, New Zealand’s leading arts and current affairs weekly magazine. Jane’s work has also been published in several books, Gone North (2004) with Dame Fiona Kidman, Jane Ussher Portraits (2004) and Martin Bosley Cooks (2006), and her work features regularly in magazines such as NZ Geographic, Sunday Magazine, Life & Leisure and House & Garden, Metro and North & South. Created with her favourite camera, a medium format Hasselblad, Jane’s images are beautiful, revealing, often sombre, and always true to the integrity of the person or object she is photographing. She lives in Auckland with her husband Grant Gallagher and their son Nicholas.

3.      Home Work
When architects accept a client’s commission they are working to fulfill the client’s aspirations. When they build their own houses they have only themselves to please.

In this fascinating and handsomely produced book, Patrick Reynolds and John Walsh go inside 20 homes built and still lived in by their architects. These range from homes built in the 1960s through to brand new houses only recently completed, throughout New Zealand. Patrick Reynolds’ skillful camera captures their details and John Walsh’s sparkling text explains the signficance of each house while also examining its architect’s career. Given that they are all practitioners with a significant body of work (including Ian Athfield, Peter Beaven and Gordon Moller), together the essays create a survey of high architectural endeavour over the last 50 years.

Author Biography

Patrick Reynolds is New Zealand’s leading architectural photographer. His work is published in leading architecture magazines both here and overseas. His recent books include New New Zealand Houses (with John Walsh), Architecture Uncooked (with Pip Cheshire) and Villa (with Jeremy Salmond and Jeremy Hansen). John Walsh is the managing editor of AGM Publishers, directly responsible for Architecture New Zealand, Houses and Urbis magazines. He wrote New New Zealand Houses with Patrick Reynolds. The Right Metal Picture Frame for Your Art Photography

June 6, 2011 by Digital Photography

While paintings are traditionally framed in wood, art photography usually calls for metal picture frames. However, you’ll want to be careful about the metal picture frame that you use; the wrong metal picture frame can greatly detract from the artifact.

It’s also important to understand that there is much more to protecting and displaying an art photograph than a metal picture frame by itself.

Getting Started

If you are new to the metal picture framing process, you may wish to consider metal picture frame kits. Framing a picture is an involved process that requires a fair amount of skill; however, with metal picture framing kits, much of the work is done for you. The only limitation with such kits is that your photos must be of a standard size and ratio.

That said, the contents of metal picture framing kits include:

•    mount board
•    photo corners
•    mat board
•    a metal picture frame
•    glazing

This is what is required in order to make your metal picture framing project a success.

Putting It Together

The first step will be to attach the photo to the mount board, using photo corners. These corners are self-adhesive, and will serve to hold your photo in place.

Next, mat board is placed over the photo to prevent physical contact with the glazing, which fits over the top in order to protect the photo from the environment and direct sunlight.

It is important to select a kit with materials that are acid-free, as acids can cause considerable damage to photographs over time.

Choosing The Right Metal Picture Frames

Metal picture frames come in a range of styles and colors. When choosing a metal picture frame (whether on its own or as part of a kit), you’ll want to take into consideration the décor of the room in which it is to be displayed as well as lighting and other colors in the space. Generally, a black metal picture frame goes with almost anything, but there may be times when another color is more appropriate. There are no hard-and-fast rules, here; let your own sense of aesthetics guide you.

Costs

Although the price of metals have been rising steadily over the past few years, metal picture frames are still less than comparable wooden frames. Chances are, you’ll have little trouble finding a metal picture frame that fits your budget.

Susan Slobac writes about–metal picture frames.

Surreal Art & Photography

June 3, 2011 by Digital Photography

Surrealism in photography was one of the major revolutionary changes in the evolution of photography. Rather than art, photography was reviewed as a copying effort. But, in fact surrealism was a break through in photography, which motivated the photographers for more experiments.

Surrealism was a movement in the art and intellectual activities, emerged after World War I. Andre Breton, was the founder of the surrealistic concepts and he has gathered the influence from the Dande movement. Surrealism is actually the real expression of mental emotions, without any polishing. Andre Breton describes surrealism in Surrealist Manifesto, as the pure psychic automatism expressed in the real functionality of a person. Surrealistic art forms characteristically differ from the conventional forms in not having specific shape or idea. It can be the expression of basic human instinct and imaginative faculties of the unconscious mind. But, when surrealism comes to photography, the critics did not even imagine such a possibility. However, “Marquise Casati” by Man Ray, made a change to the belief, as it featured multiple eyes for the photograph. Even though, it was an accidental blurring, it proved the chances for the feasibility of surrealistic works.

Man Ray and Lee Miller are considered as legends in surrealistic photography as they were very successful to overcome the limitations of photography to create surrealistic images. Maurice Tabard is another famous surrealist, who had his own technique for surrealistic imaging. Hans Bellmer creatively used mechanical dolls to symbolize sexualized images, where as for Rene Magritte camera was the tool to make photographic equivalents of his paintings.

Surrealist photographs are described as the images, which symbolically represent dreams, night mares, intoxication, sexual ecstasy, hallucination and madness. The difficulty with photography medium is that it imbibes the reality, and often the real images cannot be sufficient to express such unconventional patterns. But, the famous surrealist photographers are able to fulfill the task since they can use the photographic techniques effectively. The ordinary snapshots, body photographs, anthropological photographs, medical photographs, movie stills, and even police photographs are manipulated to create the impression of surrealist images in the photographs.

Surrealism in photography is mainly performed using the different techniques. The differential techniques of light and lenses can itself be the primary technique for surrealism. Photomontage is one of the popular processing techniques, in which the several images are coupled together. In photogram, a photographic paper can be used instead of camera to imprint the image. The images produced by the flush of light can create amazing images that has a surrealistic look.

Multiple exposure is another technique for surrealism, in which the camera is clicked twice or more, without rolling the negative. The second image will be superimposed on the first image and the final product will be an undefined mixture of both. Cliche verre or glass negative is the surrealistic technique that uses negative coated from glass plate. Anyhow, solarization or Sabattier effect seems to be the most remarkable technique for surrealism. It produces dramatic effect of patterns through the flushing of the light on the photograph, while developing in the darkroom. It was discovered by Lee Miller, which have selective reversal of highlights and shadows. The light and dark areas with the distinct line of reversal make it most appropriate for surrealism.

Surrealism in photography has progressed much from its primitive stages. The new technology and lenses offer immense opportunity to the new generation photographers to portray their mental emotions in the frame of cameras.

Domen Lombergar is a surrealist artist who runs a surrealism portal trying to bring the idea of surrealism to the public.
