An orthophoto is an high resolution aerial photo that is used to generate a map of a large area or land mass. The most common example of orthophotic maps is the popular application that is distributed by Google, namely Google Maps. These maps are, of course, generated using satellite imaging and very sophisticated technology. However, before the advent of such technology, all orthophotic maps were created using aerial photography.

The common element that stands to this day is the fact that 3-D perspective needs to be corrected in order to create a truly functional map. All that has changed is the means by which the photos that enable this process are achieved. Creating orthophotic maps using aerial photography was a complicated task and yet many individuals chose to do it. These maps greatly aided in many areas and had a diverse range of applications.

There are still many limitations to applications such as Google Maps, such as the inability to achieve the desired levels of detail in certain areas where satellite imaging is not perfect. In these scenarios, aerial photography is still the best way to go and continues to enable individuals to create the maps they need.
